Monday morning, my buddy Mike out in Pacific Grove, CA sent me a text… I had just spent Car Week at his place. He told me that Magnus Walker was in town as part of the festivities for the opening of Carousel Porsche’s new dealership building.

Cool… I love Porsches… I was dumb enough to have sold my ’84 911 about a year and a half ago when a guy offered me double what I paid for it just a year earlier. I had just been out at the Werks Reunion in Monterey during car week, I especially like 911s with style, hot rods. I drove Mike’s killer ’74 911 with a 3.0 SC motor and WEVO shifter in it a week and a half ago, all over the Monterey Peninsula… automotive Xanadu! Maybe the most fun car I’ve ever driven… I couldn’t believe Magnus was in town… so I hopped in my 250SL to drive all of 5 minutes from my house to the dealership to see what was going on.

As I approached the dealership on the frontage road… I heard a car before I saw it… unmistakably Porsche flat six, then it appeared, from behind this truck parked in the westbound lane…

“Oh, cool” I thought,  “There’s #277, right there, awesome… oh, wait, he’s coming right at me, how much is this going to hurt?”

And then it was over. The video posted here by Fox 9 news and the Minneapolis Star Tribune tells the story better than I ever could.

My car was completely unscathed… it was not ‘clipped’ it was not ‘brushed’ my wheels were not damaged… I scuffed the tires lightly on the curb at the last moment, but the hub caps were untouched… even the driver’s seat remained ‘unsoiled’ (amazingly). It isn’t my place to analyze the crash, or make a judgment about Magnus… I will say that I think he has some cool cars and I think he has probably done a lot to open the eyes of a younger crowd to the magic of vintage Porsches. In the end, what I think doesn’t matter, but I am glad things didn’t end up a LOT WORSE.

What does the cowboy in The Big Lebowski say? “Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you”.

The Pagoda abides.
